According to the National Fire Protection Association, almost two-thirds of home fire deaths result from fires in homes with no smoke alarms or no working smoke alarms. The Great fire of Toronto (1904) was great fire that destroyed a large section of Downtown Toronto with damage estimated around $10 million. In total, over 250 firefighters helped fight the fire and used between 9.5 and 11 million litres of water. There were five injuries, including Fire Chief John Thompson who broke his leg in a fall.
