Music is something we all enjoy and love listening to. It has shaped this country and the world as we know it. It is important we take a step back and examine how music of all types makes us feel. Histoire du Tango is a piece written for flute and guitar by Astor Piazolla (1921-1992). This piece of of music is very wonderful to listen to. The genre is classic tango but has hints of modernism with the way the composer wrote the piece. Piazolla is a big fan of using the guitar to play a rhythm on the body of the guitar. The flute for the most part is always playing lyrically and with as much musicality as possible. The use of vibrato and body movements was key in order for the musicians to really let us know the mood of the piece. The piece at time gets very saddening but then with in a few measures the entire timbre and feeling of the piece will completely change. When we talk about Rousseau ushering in music and stories and I think “Histoire du Tango” really holds that to be true. Throughout the piece the story can get very sad but yet very bright and happy. The beginning starts with flute playing a motif: Short; Shorter; Shorter; Long The motif it comes up occasionally throughout the course of the piece. It is definitely mood setting. In my opinion the guitar rarely gets the melody. He is more of a replacement of the piano than a soloist instrument. He does have some fun moments but mostly when that takes place he is not being accompanied by the flute but rather playing…

What is a woodwind instrument? The woodwind instruments are instruments that produce sound as a result of air flowing through them. Instruments that belong to this family include the oboe, clarinet, saxophone, bassoon and flute. While all of the other instruments mentioned are actually classified as reed instruments because that is the way that the air flows through them, the flute is an instrument that makes its sound from air being blown across an opening. The openings are closed or kept open…

At the end of my sixth grade school year, I received an audition packet for chair placements. I knew I had a shot at getting first chair, since all of the flautists above me last year had graduated, so I resolved to work as hard as I possibly could on the packet. The day I got my packet, I went home and immediately made a “practice calendar”, which I hung on my wall. I told myself that in order to get first chair, I would have to practice every single day. I knew it wouldn’t be easy, but I…

performed a variety of repertoire from the 1600’s to the present both solo and in an ensemble. They played pieces with multiple movements such as Concerto IV by J.B. de Boismortier and pieces without multiple movements such as Canzone by Samuel Barber. I enjoyed the variety of the concert the most because there were multiple performers and styles of music from many genres to keep the audience engaged. My favorite piece was one played by Brianna Bount, The Pied Piper by Gordon Jacob, because it…
