At the start of the English 1A semester there a couple of things that I seemed to struggle with. First was I hadn’t written much of anything at all since high school had ended for me nearly four years ago, though I do try to keep a personal journal and loved writing poetry growing up. Between work, a dog, maintaining social activities and the daily hassles of life, writing quickly became an old past time. So, when sitting in class on my first day and being told to freewrite about anything, I froze not remembering how to just write though I am a girl who normally has plenty to say. Once I finally got started another problem soon arose, it had been so long since I had to put anything down on paper that my mind was unaware of how to properly write a paragraph let alone an essay if I had too. There were words that would come to mind that I couldn’t remember how to spell so I would end up changing how I was saying something or what I was saying. There were moments where I’d put words down and then stare at them questioning if I had spelled them all right. Finally, was punctuation I have never really known where to place all the fancy different symbols that I see on my keyboard. Colons/semicolons, dashes, hyphens, parentheses, brackets, braces, brackets and even apostrophes have been confusing too me throughout most of my life.
