He also made people believe that he was the second coming. Jones started receiving negative media attention, allegedly being involved in financial fraud as well as child abuse and he started becoming paranoid that US authorities would capture him. He wanted to create a classless and non-racial society. Thus he decided to move his following to Guyana, South America. The People's Temple preached against racism. They also aimed to help the poor, disadvantaged and racial minorities. They were affiliated with Disciples of Christ ministry. The majority of their members were African American. Jones believed in the salvific power of socialism, and they followed traditional Christianity. In 1977 it was believed that there were at least 20 000 members and 2 000 of them were willing to go to Guyana. Guyana was ideal as it had a large black population and a socialist government, and it was the only country in South America with English as the official language. In 1973, Jones leased land from the Guyanese government and cleared it of vegetation. In 1974, a group of 50 of Jones' followers had moved to the colony. By 1977, over 1 000 Temple members occupied Jonestown. People worked long hours in the fields, and were harshly punished if Jones' authority was questioned. There were armed guards patrolling the…
