A year after running for office he participated in trying to stop a California law from going into effect that would give gay teachers the right to be fired, because of who they were (Carnes and Garraty 669). His involvement in the process was a success and the law was denied. He is important, because throughout his life up until his assassination he did whatever he could to stand up for himself and gays everywhere.
