One of these chemicals benefits the caterpillar by helping to protect it from infections because insects (such as myself) do not have immune systems like humans do but only immune responses. It takes this risk for this reward. Additionally, within a day the tobacco plant has its true induced direct chemical defense ready. Overall, the tobacco hornworm is not entirely specialized, as its name suggested but is also a generalist and maintains its role as a pest.
