    Short Story Clomp

Clomp. Clomp. Clomp. Clomp. Clomp. Chunk. The world slowly fizzles into existence around me as I slowly rise to my feet. It’s an absurdly small room, probably about 12 feet square. A single dim light bulb on the ceiling fails to fully illuminate the room. My head is killing me. There’s blood in my hair. I want to fall back to the floor. The walls and floor are smoother than concrete, but just as stern and unwelcoming. The air is musty and a thin layer of dust covers everything. The room is only furnished with a twin-sized bed and a small bookshelf. The crisp autumn air had filled me with an uncommon sense of hope as I traversed my daily route downtown. The old brick walls of the local businesses were more welcoming than usual, and I had taken to a bit of window-shopping rather than my usual habit of keeping my head down and rushing to my destination. Collections of rustic dolls and antique shops could hold my attention. I paid more attention to the laughing families and couples exploring Main Street. Maybe it was a bit sad for a twenty something to be wandering this street alone, but I had orange leaves and some half-memorized Van Morrison song playing in my head, so I felt a smile creeping onto my face nonetheless. “In a good mood today, eh Joe?” started the girl behind the counter “Yeah, I guess you could say that,” my name is Joey, not Joe, but she knew how easily she could pick my nerves. “Do I even have to ask anymore?” “Maybe I’m turning over a new leaf and I’ll…

The year is 2012. 7 years. It’s been a gruesome 7 years without Adeline. It’s all my fault. I killed her. The anger in my voice is what pushed her over the edge, literally. I let out a groan as I punched the bedroom wall that already had many holes as a result of my anger. The bedroom was littered with clothes of women. This was the only thing that eased the pain. Killing. It gave me such a thrill. Something about the way the blood would pour out, how they would beg for their lives, and oh,…

My life changed in a blank of an eye when I laid eyes on my girlfriend Fox. Right now I’m on the phone with her best friend Elliot, “So it’s been eleven months that I’ve been dating with Fox. She’s just too marvelous to put into words. I’m absolutely head over heels in love with her. I want to ask her to marry me, how should I pop the question?” Elliot went silent, and then I hear squealing, “Boy it’s taken you long enough? Oh my god this is fantastic news! Like I’m overwhelmed with emotions,…

She walked quietly into the bedroom I had been staying in ever since Benjamin passed away. My daughter, Amelia, allowed me to live with her because she knew my husband’s death would have been difficult to deal with on my own. She had just returned from collecting a few photo albums from my house in Manhattan. “Good morning,” Amelia said cheerily carrying three enormous photo albums, “I can’t believe you have so many pictures of you and Dad. There must be so many memories you two shared.”…

“Riley, it’s time to wake up.” Topanga sing songed as she entered her daughter’s bedroom. A muffled response came from beneath the purple comforter. “You start school today; you should be excited.” Topanga said. “Not going” a more clear answer rang from under the covers. “Of course you are going” Topanga insisted and pulled the comforter off of Riley and the bed. “Get up, or I’ll send your father in here.” Topanga warned before she headed downstairs to go start breakfast. The thirteen year old…
