The texts “I Escaped A Violent Gang” and “Making Sarah Cry” have similar themes of courage. Each text shows the theme differently throughout the text. In “I escaped A Violent Gang” the author had to go through different events needing courage. In “Making Sarah Cry” Sarah shows courage while standing up to her bullies. While both of these texts share a common theme, the mood of the texts is completely different. The memoir “I Escaped A Violent Gang” has a mood of sadness and is a bit scary because the author and her family could be killed at any moment. In the poem “Making Sarah Cry” the mood is a bit uplifting as she stands up to her bullies. In the memoir, “I Escaped A Violent Gang,” the author shows us that there is a theme of courage throughout the piece. At the beginning of “I Escaped A Violent Gang,” it tells the time when the author is court testifying as an eyewitness to something that happened between two gangs. In the text, it says, “I was the only eyewitness, so what I said would determine which one went to jail.” Later in the memoir, a novel helps the author realize that she doesn’t want to be in the gang that she was raised in. At the end of the text, the author has to show more courage after she left the gang. “After I testified, I left the gang. I got death threats. But nobody came after me.” I think the beginning of the memoir shows courage because she had the idea of lying in court, but instead tells the truth and it helps push her and her family out of the…
