Psychological behavior in arsonists Arson is a crime that occurs worldwide, it has an immense impact on the victims and the community the arson takes place in. Arson leads to major financial damage, serious injury, or even death. In many cases in attempting to link psychiatric abnormalities to the arsonists have been focused on sexual motivation for firesetting. This psychiatric flaw has been linked to urination, homosexuality and cruelty to animals in the childhoods of firesetters have all been documented. Those who set fires other than for profit are frequently called pyromaniacs. In the first research article, Firesetters Admitted to a Maximum Security Psychiatric Institution published in the Journal of Interpersonal Violence in December 1996. In this study, Harris and Rice took note that most of the previous studies of not-for-profit firesetting, revenge was a common motive. They compared a group of firesetters in a maximum security psychiatric facility to patients without histories of firesetting using, staff ratings, and role-play measures. The Firesetters were less assertive than other patients in situations that required verbal expression of anger, disappointment, and hurt feelings, and they described themselves along with others, shy and withdrawn.
