On March 18, 2012, an unlikely group of men gathered at 3:30 am in the Mormon town of Huntsville, Utah. They were Catholic Monks of the Order of Cicstercians of the Strict Observance (Trappists) performing a routine most of them have been doing for more than 60 years; rising in the middle of the night to attend Vigils and to pray together by chanting Psalms and doing the readings of the Divine Office. That night, an even more improbable person participated in the Liturgy of the Hours—a convinced atheist. I was that unbeliever. On this occasion, I had made…

The gospel narrative points out to the actions and words of Jesus, but Stookey makes a good case in stressing the importance of “do this,” and claims it something of…

Much of the world lives as a slave to exciting stimuli, which draws people into a cyclical pattern of falling into fleeting promises of happiness. Tish Harrison Warren explains this pattern and how to overcome this worldly trap in her book Liturgy of the Ordinary. Warren uses moments of difficulty in her own life to relate to the reader; for example, that she is able to find value through the mundane task of brushing her teeth or consuming leftover food. As a whole people, God created each…

I used Habit 3 to complete the first part of this assignment by being a prioritizer, and doing something that was important, but not urgent, ahead of time. I went to church and made sure to get photo evidence of the Church to make it clear that I went. I also made a plan about when I would go, and when I would answer these questions. The comfort zone can be defined as something you do every day, security. While the courage zone is more about risk, and things you've never done. For me, this…

Similarly within western liturgy this same consistency and daily routine of worship can be seen in the four cycles of prayer which all influence each other at some point. On a daily basis the way in which the Church worked was in a repetitive form, constituting in the Office and the Mass. The Office comprised of ceremonies during the evening and then six hours of worship between daybreak and dusk. A priest more readily practiced Mass by the 11th century on an individual basis. This meant that in…
