Lucius Cornelius Sulla, like Marius before him, was also a renowned general involved in numerous victories for the Romans. He played a key role in the victory over King Jugurtha of the Numidians which brewed jealousy within Marius. Sulla was appointed consul in 88 and was given command of an army by the senate to lead the war against King Mithradates VI of Pontus. However, Marius was instead appointed commander with the help of the tribune Publius Sulpicius Rufus. Sulla did not accept this change and convinced his soldiers, who were steadfast in their loyalty to him, to join him in his march on Rome, which they did and Sulla succeeded in wresting control back from Marius. Sulla then set off on a long campaign against the Greeks which spanned…

Sulla 's tremendous energy and drive made short work of his enemies, and he entered Rome in triumph. His first act was to massacre any of his enemies, including some 90 senators and 2600 rich equites. Among those narrowly escaping Sulla 's wrath was the defiant young son-in-law of Marius, Julius Caesar. Sulla then became dictator, and reformed the government to put the Senate back in firm control of the state, just like in the good old days. A year later, Sulla abdicated his powers and retired…

Sulla provided the perfect example for future generals in how to use their army for personal haven. This style of leadership increased the emergence of a more mercenary army where the soldiers wish for enrichment left them increasingly willing to follow generals into war regardless of what they may have represented. Sulla essentially ended the days of Republican loyalty, “Rome, with the Senate at the head, could no longer command the allegiance of Romans.” Veterans that fought for Sulla…

The Contradiction of Brutus Despite his primary goal to prevent Rome from falling into the hands of a dictator who would ruin Rome from the inside out, Brutus himself ironically acts like a totalitarian, tyrannical, despot. Even though Brutus meets up with the other patricians planning to kill Caesar because of his threat as a king, Brutus ironically acts like a king when he overrides the other’s ideas to enforce his own logic. When Cassius confronts him in the second scene, Brutus first reveals…
