Machiavelli highlights the importance of gaining power while leaving others down, and Musharraf definitely showed that aspect of ruling with his amendments and appointment to 'Chief Executive.' Machiavelli states that a ruler must not be "despised and hated"(76) to prevent conspiracies against them, which Musharraf utilized to gain power over the people and improve Pakistan's economy. Because of this Machiavellian principle, Musharraf was able to throw out the government, with himself as the leader of a coup executed on October 12, 1999, against Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif("Pervez..."); this coup was successful, since the people and the army did not like the previous government because they were not helping with their problems. Musharraf even stated, they had "no constitutional solutions...to the problems that the country was facing"(Profile...).
