    emissions of carbon dioxide from fossil fuels isn’t decreased or eliminated, not only would the Marshal Islands be completely covered, but parts of the United States like San Francisco’s coasts, the Boston Bay area, and so many other major costal cities in the United States could be the next victim of rising sea levels. The Marshall Islands foreign minister Tony De Brum is pleading with policy makers in highly developed nations to help in the fight against rising sea levels. De Brum noticed that on the Marshall Islands Kwajalein Atoll, the United States’ Ronald Reagan Ballistic Missile Defense Test Site was more than equipped to handle the flooding that came with the rising sea levels. This base is crucial to the United States to testing and a key place for jobs for the islanders. But De Brum noted that the base had desalination machines and heavy duty sea walls to protect itself from the rising waters; if these same defenses against sea levels could be provided on the main island, thousands of people would be sheltered from the threat of being swept away during the night by the ocean. The NyTimes article also noted that if the cities could be built up by six feet and a new drainage system could be installed that this would drastically increase the chance of this small island nation surviving and thriving.
