Steel Magnolias Theatre Critique Steel Magnolias is a play by Robert Harling performed at East Bank Theater on September 24, 2016 and was directed by Jared Watson. Steel Magnolias is the story about six women in northwest Louisiana that argue and gossip about things that happen in their town, but a tragic event amongst the group brings them closer than ever before. The theme of the play is friendship. Throughout the play, the women stick together and care for one another through the ups and downs despite their differences. Heather Peak Hooper plays Truvy, a hair stylist in the play. Hooper did a wonderful job in voice, body, emotions, facial expressions, and projection. Her voice was loud and clear, her words were pronounced correctly, with the exception of stuttering on a few words. She kept the upbeat and bubbly tempo of Truvy, and the audience always laughed at her witty comments. Her expressions helped with her dialogue…

It revolves around the death of one of the women’s children and how they come together to support each other and deal with this tragedy. The movie opens at Truvy’s Beauty shop, where Annelle, a kooky beauty school graduate is hired to work in the shop. Across town, at M’lynn’s home, they are preparing for her…

Steel Magnolias is about a group of friends. Just like any group of friends, the women talk about the people they know, their wonderful memories, exciting upcoming events, and the hardships they are experiencing. Although everyone in this play is a friend of one another, each character is very different. The audience is able to see the differences, by the way, the characters think, act, and dress. An artistic element that stood out to me was the costuming. The actresses’ costumes reveal a lot…
