9 is a very complex and diverse piece. The dynamics in the song are as wide ranging as it gets, containing moments of very loud burst using forte, mezzo forte, and fortissimo. What makes it very interesting though is that it also contains many sections with very soft and medium parts. It is not contained to one tempo either, although most of the time it stays around a moderate tempo. It contains uses of articulation such as staccato and accents. In the song it uses an orchestra, from listening I picked up several different instruments. I heard uses of flutes, clarinets, and bassoon, along with violins, violas, and the bass. From the brass I believe to have heard to trumpet but cannot identify what else. I did enjoy this piece because It is very…

In this film, the Vienna Philharmonic played Antonin Dvorak’s Symphony No. 9 in E Minor “From the New World.” This piece displays the serenity of the new world, with violins and violas playing pizzicato to resemble trickling streams, the basses and cellos playing fortissimo in order to represent roaring rivers, and the brass playing in unison to signify the enormous, yet beautiful mountain ranges. Dvorak’s Symphony No. 9 contains four movements. The first movement is in sonata allegro form.…

Beethoven symphony no.5, no.9 and Beriloz symphonie fantastique show the detail explanations. The thematic recall has structure functions in Beethoven symphony no.5 because it works as structural marker. The thematic recall happened in 4th mvt of no.5. In the development section of 4th mvt, the scherzo theme from 3rd mvt comes back. While the scherzo does not end, it works as a transition to link to 4th mvt. Because of this structural setting and the thematic recall, two movements join together…

Because I was unable to attend the Mozart After Dark concert that I was looking forward to seeing live, I was fortunate enough to find a concert through YouTube, which was titled “The Berlin Celebration Concert – Beethoven, Symphony No 9, Bernstein 1989.” This concert, which recreated Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9, was performed on December 25th, 1989 by an international cast of musicians and vocalist coming from groups around the world, such as: Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks,…

When listening to any piece by Beethoven, you receive the whole range of emotions, and the Fifth Symphony is no different. Just the first four notes, a simple da-da-da-dum, is enough to send shivers up your back. Packed with all the furious confidence of Beethoven, it suggests scarlet eruptions, heavenly processions and all the powers human drama. These four notes started the memorable first movement. This movement is like a Stephen King novel because it is so saturated with intensity and…

9 in D minor, Op. 125. This symphony, a true work of genius, was Beethoven’s last and and can stand alone as the transition into the Romantic Era. Premiering on May 7th, 1824, Symphony No. 9 was greeted by an overwhelmingly enthusiastic audience, as this piece is Beethoven’s greatest ever composition. The work embodies the musical duality of the nineteenth century, the struggle between the Classic and Romantic Eras, between the old and new. Within the eighteenth century, there existed the quest…

This past weekend, I had the pleasure of attending the Artist-Faculty Recital Series at the Fairchild Theatre on MSU 's Campus. The concert featured a multitude of pieces ranging from the Baroque and Classical music periods to modern day compositions. Several of the pieces were played in a piano-trombone basso continuo and the last piece was played by a trombone choir with two featured soloists. Going into the concert I did not know what to expect. I had listened to classical music in my MUS…

reusing material immediately went against romantic ideals. Under romantic ideals, “the purpose of art was the expression of one’s unique self, one’s ‘original self’” (Taruskin, 2005) and Beethoven was described as “‘a completely romantic composer’” early on (Hoffman, cited in Taruskin, 2005). One of the qualities that cemented Beethoven’s place as a romantic composer and appeared antithetical to Rossini was the organic nature of the former’s musical structure. Beethoven often introduced musical…

While cheerful and bright melodies are used to represent Mozart’s early years in his short lives, the prelude of the opera “Don Giovanni” composed by Mozart after the death of Leopold Mozart – Mozart’s father – indicates the relationship between Mozart and Leopold and shows the process how Salieri set his scheme foreshadowing the death of Mozart. First of all, the opera “Don Giovanni” suggests the abnormal relationship between Mozart and his father. In the film, Mozart is illustrated as a…

A ray of light in a world filled with darkness--that is what NYCB is. And on every occasion the company presents Jerome Robbins' sublime, majestic The Goldberg Variations that light shines even brighter. Especially if the work is as lovingly performed as it was on Saturday evening by Ashley Bouder, Sterling Hyltin, and Sara Mearns (from all three of whom I have been accustomed to expect efforts of the highest caliber); Lauren Lovette, Emilie Gerrity, Anthony Huxley, Taylor Stanley, Daniel…
