At the Wimbledon and U.S. open she and her partner Max Mirnyi won two grand slam mixed doubles titles, that same year. Williams beat three of the top four tennis players in the world in the singles category at the U.S. open. That marked her first singles victory at a grand slam event. Which means Serena was only the second african american women to win a singles title at a grand slam event since Althea Gibson's win in 1958, who was the first african american to win a grand slam singles title. Williams finished the 1999 season as the fourth ranked women's tennis player in the world. But in the following years to come Serena encountered many injuries resulting her to withdraw and lose in tournaments. In the 2000 season Serena and her sister Venus had double victories at Wimbledon and Olympic games. Although she had many injuries in the 2002 season she was unstoppable. Even the best players were no match for her. In Miami, Florida she defeated the top three players in the world, in one round, at the NASDAQ-100 Open. Then she joined the tennis great, Steffi Graf (1969-) Who was the only one to beat all top three players at one tournament. Three times that year Serena and Venus had faced each other.
