    he spotted a Nazi flag. Acting on instinct, he took the flag for himself. Unknown to Zamperini, this would be one of his last races, but it was not the end of his mischievous nature. After the Olympics and the bombing of Pearl Harbor, Zamperini was drafted into the Army Air Corps, where he trained to be a bombardier. On his 7th mission, Zamperini 's plane barely returned to base with half of the crew wounded or deceased.The plane had an astounding five hundred and ninety-four holes, some the size of a man 's head. Zamperini was then forced to join the crew of the plane Green Hornet (Hillenbrand). The Green Hornet was a plane waiting for disaster to strike. With a shortage of planes and excess parts, spare parts on this plane were taken to be used for other planes in worse shape, causing frequent malfunctions for the Green Hornet. On a rescue mission, looking for survivors of a plane crash, the Green Hornet crashed. Zamperini, Francis McNamara and Russell Phillips were the only three crew members to survive the crash. Trying to survive on two small rafts with less than two days of food supplies was made even more difficult because McNamara was injured and they had little hope of rescue. Floating into unknown territory, the survivors were forced to capture and eat birds that flew close, drink what little rainwater fell from the sky, and fend off the constantly encircling sharks (Hillenbrand). These days on the raft showed Zamperini’s resiliency and his will not to give up.…
