Coming home to a nice, warm house with a fireplace in the living room and a nice insulated building wasn’t a luxury the colonial people had. Instead, they had nearly the exact opposite; sometimes freezing temperatures with only an object that no one in today’s world would call a blanket. So, once again, the people of the American colonies had to innovate and they did exactly that. “Most Americans timber-framed their houses in ways descended from traditional English techniques.” Yes, this might seem like nothing, but to the people who were used to staying in different climates outdoors, this was an opulence. They would soon discover a new technique known as “balloon framing” and this would take over timber framed houses. “Balloon framing was adopted first by builders in fast growing Western cities and commercial towns, for whom speed and economizing on materials were highly important.” This was such an ingenious idea, that it would keep timber framed houses out of the picture after the 1900’s even.
