in the process of leaving behind. Instead of murdering them, Jules shows them just how violent and dangerous the abyss is, most likely scaring them away from it in the process. Travis Bickle, the hero of Taxi Driver, is called to adventure by his chronic insomnia. It is what leads him to apply for a job as a night time taxi driver, which also happens to be the first threshold. The taxi job is what helps show Bickle the grimy, dark underbelly of the city, and applying and passing the test of the threshold guardian (the taxi office boss) is his first step into that world. While there is no explicit supernatural aid in the film, fellow driver Wizard could be interpreted as this, due to the magical nature of his name and how he acts as one of Travis’ few confidants. The final conflict comes when Travis attempts to save Iris by murdering her pimp, Sport. He has descended all the way into the abyss, and suffers a near death experience by getting shot. However, Scorcese creatively twists the stages that take place after the near death experience. Bickle is “transformed” in the eyes of the people. He is praised by Iris’ parents and the media and is awarded with a medal. In the end, Travis still holds his job as a taxi driver, and denies being hero. While he may be considered transformed by others, perhaps Bickle is the only one who knows he is still trapped in the abyss. In both of the examples, the protagonist or hero acquires a certain wisdom. Jules Winnfield realizes that he…
Today is the day that my team and I had been working on all season. It’s competition day. Now this year I feel we have a good chance. We have been practicing non-stop from the sun up to sundown; there was no such thing as downtime. We had an awesome dance routine and one of the best crowd-pleasers around. But to top it off we had a killer stunt at the end that was sure enough going to win us first place. “Alright, ladies. It is time for everyone to get up and get dressed.” My coach said as…

This weeks class was on worldviews, cosmologies, and religion and how it relates to healthcare. It was interesting to see how various types of cultures have different views and how sometimes it can be source of conflicts when deciding on health care interventions. I redid the Astro chart and I had to look at my birth certificate to see what time I was born at. I usually don’t believe in these astrological signs or palm reading but it doesn't hurt to look. My rising sun, or the first impression…

To begin, the film Taxi Driver is such a complex work of art that displays countless literary elements. The humble yet aggressive protagonist, Travis Bickle, creates and sets the mysterious and suspenseful mood for the entire film. His actions come from being a mentally unstable veteran, which he believes that violence is the only option when trying to help in a situation. He drives his taxi day and night from Brooklyn to the Bronx and to Harlem, which are very dangerous cities in New York.…
Martin Scorsese's Taxi Driver came out at just the right time; a year after the end of the Vietnam War. America was disenthralled with life, we were no longer considered a moralistic and trusted country that we were once apt to be. Taxi Driver psychologically deciphers the fractures left by the soldiers who came home from the Vietnam War; they have experienced things that have turned them alienated to their natural environment. Travis Bickle is its subject and his journey is a personal one;…
also complements the night glamour of the New York City’s urban terrain. When we see Travis on his yellow cab passing through the various neighborhood of this fascinating city, the mellow echo of the saxophone just devours all the restless we have, and let us fall into the Travis’s world of loneliness. The second theme corresponds to the psychotic tendencies of Travis, with the unresolved, dissonant chord played by trumpets and drums. At various scenes in the movie, the uncanny sound strikes the…
