Purpose: The purpose of this briefing note is to bring The Board Of Directors For Vancouver General Hospital up to speed on the current porter system conflicts, and give some recommendations on improving the efficiency of the Porter system to prevent as much delays as possibles, and meet the demands of the hospital. Background: Vancouver General Hospital (VGH) poster system represents a vital aspect of efficient hospital operations, facilitating the timely flow of patients, equipment and material to all departments within the hospital. For example, if nurses or doctors need to move a patient to another part of the hospital for surgery, or need materials such as blood the doctor or nurse contacts the hospitals porter dispatch. Once the dispatcher receives the request, the information is entered into a queuing system, and assigned an urgent level (STAT, ASAP, or Routines, where STAT is the highest priority level). Surgical and emergency procedure were priority over general procedures, and maintenance, but the system does take into consideration, that if a request is in the system for a long period of time it will have a higher priority level over time. After a task was completed and dropped off, the ported notified the dispatch and received a new assignment. Issue: The porter system is currently facing many challenges, such as communication issues, inefficient dispatching routines, a supporting software, and a conflict between porter supply and demand.
