Anino Acid Metabolism II - Flashcards: 46

Description: This lecture continues the descrition of amino acid synthetic and degradative pathways. The imprtance of folate in methyltransfer reactions and its reliance on methylcobalamin (B12), will be discussed. The methylation of homocysteine will be described as a reaction of the activated methyl cycle by which the universal methyl donor, S-adenosylmethionine (SAM, of AdoMet) is formed, used and regenerated. The relationshiips between folate, methylcobalamin and SAM will be presented with respect to per ...

Metabolic Aspects of Liver Function - Flashcards: 24

Description: IN additino to its metabolic capabilities, the liver synthesizes proteins that serve critical physiological roles. Albumin, a plasma protein synthesized by the liver, is critical in maintaining water balance in teh body. The cytochrome P450 enzymes play a role in detoxification of drugs and other xenobiotics. Plasma levels of enzymes that are resiedent in liver cells can be used as markers of damage to the liver.
