Heme Metabolism and Bilirubin - Flashcards: 36

Description: The synthesis and degradation of heme are linked to the funcition of heme-containing proteins. With increased physiological demands for heme proteins, heme synthesis increases. When heme proteins tunover, heme is released and converted into bilirubin. Inherited and acquired defects in these processes are associated with jaundice and with rare inherited disorders called porphyrias.

Oxidation of NADH and Reduced Flavins By The Electron Transport Chain - Flashcards: 43

Description: The electron transport chain enables aerobic organisms to capture a far greater proportion of the available free energy of respiratory substrates than anaerobic organisms. This is due to the fact that most of the energy obtained from substrates entering the TCA cycle is funneled into NADH and FADH2. The electron transport chain extracts the electrons stored in these species to create chemical energy and, in the process, reduces oxygen to water.
