<title>Outline and illustrate the view that certainty is confined to introspection and the</title>
            <link>http://www.flashcardexchange.com/flashcards/view/2184310</link>
<description>Explain the question, defining certainty as knowing something is definitely the case, introspection as self-analysis, and tautological as an unnecessary repetition of meaning.
Explain that introspection could be illustrated by Descartes’ Cogito argument, whereby self-analysis leads to the indubitable truth that he exists. Explain the argument fully and emphasise the fact that Descartes considered the senses to be dubitable, e.g. illusions, hallucinations.
•	Drawing upon Hume’s fork, you could explain that he believes certainty is confined to the tautological, claiming that experience is always subject to the problem of induction (past experience doesn’t guarantee the same future experience) and sceptical arguments, e.g. the brain in a vat scenario.
Explain that Hume argues all a priori propositions (non-experiential) are analytic, whereby the predicate is included in the subject. As such, these propositions can be reduced to the tautological law of identity (A=A), thus telling us nothing new. They can be known with certainty but they are ultimately trivial, empty truths.</description>
