One way it made their lives difficult was that they were not considered Citizens of the U.S. Zinn strongly believed it was not right and wanted it to stop. Therefore that pushed Zinn to join in the Civil rights movement and was a pioneer in the movement. When the Amendment was passed, Countries were not allowed to prevent former slaves from becoming citizens of the United States. Zinn stood up for what he believed in is right and was willing to do anything to prove his point.
