            <title>Routes of Administration</title>
            <link>http://www.flashcardexchange.com/flashcards/view/2077007</link>
<description>-Percutaneous – applied and absorbed through the skin or mucous membranes; Easy to administer and bypass the digestive tract, making their absorption more predictable
-Topical – material applied to and absorbed through the skin or mucous membranes
-Transdermal Administration absorbed through the skin; promote slow, steady absorption.
(Lotions, ointments, creams, foams, wet dressings, adhesive backed applications, suppositories)
Thin skin increases absorption rate while thick skin decreases it (scars, peripheral vascular disease)
Mucous Membranes
Moderate to rapid absorption
Tongue, cheek, eye, nose, ear
Sublingual – beneath the tongue; extremely vascular to promote rapid absorption with systemic delivery; usually sprays or tablets
Buccal – between the cheek and gums; usually tablets
Ocular – through mucous membranes of the eye; typically for local pain, infection, lubrication; often drops or ointments; od = right eye, os = left eye, ou = both eyes
Nasal – through the mucous membranes of the nose; drops or sprays; treat nasal congestion, hemorrhage, and infection
Medication atomization device (MAD) – device that produces a fine aerosol mist that permits wide and even distribution of a medication across the nasal mucosa
Aural – through the mucous membranes of the ear and ear canal; treat local infections and ear pain,; usually drops or medicated gauze</description>
