<title>GRE Literature in English Subject Test: Old &amp; Middle English</title>
            <link>http://www.flashcardexchange.com/flashcards/view/904193</link>
<description>There will be several questions on the test asking you to interpret words or passages presented in Middle English. You might even need to be familiar with a word or aspect of Old English, too (but that's less likely). Whether or not you think these questions are worth attempting is up to you.

Here are a few things you should keep in mind about Middle English. 1. Middle English is very different from Modern English, but it's still recognizable as a forerunner to the language we speak. If you get a question that asks you if something was written in Old or Middle English and it's somewhat readable, chances are it's in Middle English. Old English is just about impossible for normal folks to understand. 2. Middle English spelling is crazy and chaotic (partly because English was a different language back then and partly because spelling couldn't be standardized until the introduction of the printing press). If you open your mind, sound it out, and think creatively, though, you can usually figure the words out and/or get a sense of what the passage is about. 3. That said...you just have to know some of the vocab words that are likely to show up on the test that aren't intuitive, like &quot;ich&quot; (which means &quot;I&quot;), &quot;his&quot; (which means &quot;its&quot;), &quot;hir&quot; (which means &quot;their&quot;), and &quot;eek&quot; (which means &quot;also&quot;). 4. You should &quot;eek&quot; know a thing or two about Middle English grammar. &quot;Thee&quot; is familiar and always singular, whereas &quot;you&quot; back then was formal and could be plural--like &quot;tu&quot; vs. &quot;vous&quot; in French. Verbs usually take &quot;th&quot; in the past tense, rather than &quot;ed.&quot; i.e. people &quot;spaketh&quot; back then, rather than &quot;spoke.&quot; Nouns often take &quot;en&quot; instead of &quot;s.&quot; For example, &quot;yë&quot; (which means &quot;eye&quot;) is &quot;yën&quot; (rather than &quot;yës&quot;).

I'd recommend going through this card set once or twice and read the handy little guide at: http://docs.google.com/gview?a=v&amp;q=cache:_4lP7k1q8N4J:www.csun.edu/~sk36711/WWW/Common%2520Files/megrammar.pdf+middle+english+grammar&amp;hl=en&amp;gl=us&amp;pid=bl&amp;srcid=ADGEESi0jcPHMuudC2eaMtQYwUlXeoXP-dPwmjPxQ-dksZUR0WVI7i1xSGQ3VcbHkUmrXupyODw_vmkxrjcCy0BYOhEIwVc0Dx-1W8bxQP_8kmfLaKmKlCMQgVPBE1ILt2oKngx2KM83&amp;sig=AFQjCNGZs3Z9o3O9O30cQZoJz4sAgSa2WA to familiarize yourself with some of the key things to know about Middle English diction and syntax. But you don't need to spend too much time on this. &lt;br /&gt;It's far more important familiarize yourself with as many authors and titles as you can. (See my &quot;GRE Literature in English Subject Test&quot; flashcards for &quot;Authors,&quot; &quot;Texts,&quot; and &quot;Excerpts&quot; for more study help in these areas.)</description>
