Understanding of population health approach, determinants of health and equity, particularly how its relation to mental health is considered an asset for the position. Health information management professionals are very well equipped with these knowledge. From their first semester in the classroom they are introduced to the Canadian health system and the concept of Population health and how it is different from public health. Determinants of health which is a combination of influences that determine the status of health is also a familiar concept for HIM professionals. The requirement of Knowledge of the software systems and applications within the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority (WRHA) Community Health Services programs, including the Collaborative Health Record (CHR) and the electronic medical record (EMR) and reporting/query functionality may or may not the fulfilled by a HIM applicant depending on in which province the person finished his/her education, practicum and earned work experience. An applicant from Alberta will be more familiar with the systems and applications within Alberta Health Services than some other Regional health authority. But this should not be a huge barrier to apply for the position as the person can learn about the new system and programs over time after
