The movie emphasized how much hard work everyone puts in to keep the family going. Everyone does chores to keep the apartment clean, and everyone works to pay the bills for the apartment. For an example, in the movie it shows Lena working. Lena leaves early in the morning to be a nanny for a little white girl. Lena helps the girl get ready for school and gets her on the school bus. Similarly to Lena, Walter is a chauffeur for a rich white family. Walter says, “Yes Sir” and “No Sir”. He does not talk to anyone else like that. Additionally, whenever Walter went to the “Green Hat” someone went to go get him. Sometimes that was a lot of work to get him out of the bar because he was drunk. In the book, Mama left the apartment last. When Mama left the house she was saying her goodbyes to her memories. The book did not make the ending special. On the other hand, in the movie, Walter left the apartment last. When Walter left last the viewer could understand that he was finally the man of the house and god has hope in his future. After Walter left the house the viewer could see that the Younger’s have a great future. Meanwhile, Mama’s plant can also be discussed too. Mama has a plant throughout the movie. When Mama has no hope during a scene in the movie the plant is slowly dying, but when she does have hope in a scene the plant is alive and green. When looking back at the book, it never said anything about the plant changing. The book only mentioned that she has a plant. Therefore, the plant was not important in the book. However in the movie, whenever there was a scene in the kitchen, the angle of the camera got the plant in the shot. That is how the viewers could see the plant either dying or coming alive again. At the end of the movie, the plant was becoming more green because everyone has hope in their future. Surely, the movie did a better job at connecting hope with the Younger
