Knowles assumptions of andragogy are based on the progressive learning process. His first assumption on self-concept portrays learners as self-directed, and responsible for their learning process, and he relies on self-evaluation to measure progress and achievement (Knowles, Swanson and Holton 34). Although Knowles places such a learner in the adult category, I believe he failed in giving the age bracket of such learners. This makes it difficult to tell the ages of adults he was envisioning. Sometimes adult learning involves some directive education. There still exists some degree of dependence on other people such as instructors and professors who are acting as a guardian angel, in helping adults realize their educational …show more content…
I believe Knowles based this assumption on age. He assumed that as people age, they are exposed to different life situations which stirs discussions and fact-finding to improve their “know-how”. This may be true. When you take a look at people who are exposed to different situations in every age and when these experiences accumulate, they are considered rich in experiences, which can lead to healthy discussions. However, Knowles might have generalized experiences as education-centered, while in the real world, some of the experiences are less likely attractive in an educational setting.
Lastly, his assumption on problem center focus depicts adult learners as less subjective and focuses on solving various problems emanating from the learning process and experiences. In this assumption, I think Knowles examined the difficulty of the learning process, which is filled with too many problems compared to child learning, which focuses on many subjects so as to promote specialization at an advanced …show more content…
The self-concept makes me view myself as someone who can direct my educational life without expecting to be shown what to do at all time. It will also enable me to develop a high sense of responsibility knowing that whatever I am going to do in college is all about my present and future, and I am the one who can make it all happen to realize my academic goals. His assumption on experience will be important in recollecting what I have known throughout my past school life and other self-acquired knowledge to develop productive discussions in class. In addition, I will focus most of my life in trying to solve various challenges both in my personal life, and in those that affects the society as a whole. I will take this a challenge to develop problem-solving skills through academic-led research throughout my college
