The most common form that optic fibre technology is found in is cables. These cables have revolutionized technology, telecommunications and even medical. Uses of these cables range from telephone and internet cables that are able to run across the Pacific Ocean to military uses in tanks and drones used in combat. The cause for this is due to the advantages that the cables have. In a quick sum up they are lighter, faster and more secure. People are able to send international calls with no delay and stream videos in New Zealand that are based on servers in Europe with minimal loading time. In military uses the cables offer a substitute for copper cables used in the past. Optical fibre technology has also been seen to be …show more content…
These advantages include less interference, attenuation, and bandwidth characteristics.
Advantages
Fiber optic cables provide superior quality transmissions compared to copper systems. Long distance telecommunications using satellite technology are more likely to experiment weak connections and echoing, which decrease when using Fibre optic cables. Copper cables used for electrical transmission are much larger and heavier, and are affected by electromagnetic interference and are more likely to suffers from higher rates of loss over long distances. These decrease dramatically by using fiber optic technology.
Disadvantages
Though there are many advantages there also come limitations. The main limitation that comes with fibre optics is the inability for the cable to be bent at certain angles. This is as if the cables are bent at a certain angle the light will be more likely to not totally internally reflect and thus refract out of the medium. Also unlike copper cables fibre optic cables can only carry data and not power. Another major disadvantage is that fiber optic cables still remain the most expensive option in almost every application and therefore is hard for some business’ and people to use
