The family works in the markets selling fruits. When Macario is out of school is when the family seems to be all together as they all go back to the farm once school is out. This chapter gives a look at how their family is as a unit, and how much they rely on each other. They plan to sell the remaining land they have. A rebellion forms in the Philippines who make life harder for peasants. After returning he finds out his family had moved to Mangusmana. When arriving to his family’s new home he sees his mom plowing the field then tells her he’ll finish as they reunite. His dad has become sick as his sister Francisca takes care of him. Here we meet some of Carlos’ cousins. Once Carlos leaves for a few days and returns, his mom tells him to leave, that there is nothing there for him. He leaves with his cousin for work and money for America. Chapter 11. Carlos works as a fisherman and enjoys it. When Carlos is not working he goes to school with his cousin. Carlos one day finds a baby in the grass. The lady he shows it too is scared and forces him to leave. He goes back to Binaloanan. He then travels to tell his parents he is going to the States. Chapter 12. Carlos finds his brother Luciano and tells him of his plans to leave to America. Carlos meets Lucianos wife and daughter. At their final goodbye Luciano tells Carlos to never come back as he wishes he didn’t. The next day on the way to Manila Carlos meets a student who gives a pair of shoes and talk about where to go. The next morning Carlos takes a physical and is off to
