So, the protagonist of this novel is known as Helen Graham, an artist who flees with her son from her husband and becomes the tenant of Wildfell Hall, where she meets a new man, Gilbert Markham. The author published this novel for the purpose of addressing problems with the martial law and domestic abuse occurring in the 19th century. Because of this, the novel’s protagonist flees with her son. She found herself in a abusive marriage and obviously did not want to continue with this man. Anyhow, Anne Brontë is honest in her depiction of alcoholism and how that leads to an abusive marriage. In other words, se was not afraid to raise her voice and let others know how a woman feels when she is shoved into a corner without a voice, mistreated, abused and exploited in their silence. She was not afraid to show everyone the realities of being a woman in the 19th century and the consequences it brought upon. Her writing was a bit complicated to understand but it got easier as you kept reading a long. It’s the type of writing that keeps you hooked on the novel because it’s a reality that still occurs in our society. That is how I see how it impacted the victorian period. Although, I must say that the fashion did seem pretty interesting but just like any other period it faced its moments. We could see that it talked about feminism, law problems and injustice. Even though the authors I chose for this essay described the problems of their time, few years later, and we’re still facing the same problems. These authors spoke up about these problems in their own ways and it could have changed the perspective in their readers minds and I hope it could be done again soon. It’s a sad reality that can possibly continue. However, it could change if people actually weren’t so afraid of changing for the better. Seeing that these authors found a way to speak up about it makes me think that we should do something similar. Find a way to speak up about world problems with different methods; art, novels, short stories.
