For The Great Gatsby, the narration was helpful, to imagine the personality and the life of Jay Gatsby, his character is better known when the audience connect the thoughts that are being narrated.
The movie was very entertaining, it should a complicated romance of two people that would like to be together but one of them has already another life with another person.
