Twenty-two years ago, a 65-year-old mother of two was prescribed Prozac, one of the dangerous antidepressants, and she believes that she will continue to take it until her final days of life are up (Naish). Georgina Wakefield, 65-year-old mother of two, along with many others are afraid to stop taking Prozac, Celexa, and Zoloft because of the after side effect. Twenty-five years ago the antidepressant, Prozac, was called the “bottle of sunshine” until the world found out the dark side of this prescription drug (qtd in Naish). During an interview Georgina Wakefield said, “This green-and-white pill has been a lifesaver. Somedays I have felt like taking my life multiple times while taking this pill. I have taken it for so long that I do not know what I would do without it. Taking antidepressants, alternates a person’s personality and his or her mood swings; however, this is what links to suicide and or suicide activity (qtd in Naish). The pill targets the part of the brain that does not control the depression and alternates the brain’s functions. As it targets everywhere but the depression it sends out signal that distributes the personality of the person into not feeling like him or herself. It does not matter how old or young a person is; anybody can be diagnosed with depression or major depression. Although many people can say that his or her depression can happen with a “blue” moment, which is very common. There can be many other leading mental disorders and illnesses that can lead to depression. Many people believed that antidepressant are an “easy way” out to treating depression. The FDA did not believe that there was enough information to give antidepressants a black-box warning. Finally, when the FDA released the black-box warning, they put out public health measures. People thought that antidepressant worked extremely well, until him or her found out the bad side effects that went along with it. The more and more that these antidepressants were given out, the rate of suicide increased along with them. After, the black-box warning was first issued, the FDA monitors those antidepressants today. As the common practices started back up with the Food and Drug Administration, and realized that these antidepressants affected each age group differently.
