Australia, which consists of a 92% white population clearly mirrors the nations ideals. The origins of Australian national identity can be found in the shared traits of its inhabitants. The late nineteenth-century Australian population was largely embodied by emigrants mainly originating from the Britain, or of British descent, the majority of the populace sharing a common language, history, and customs. Aggregated identification as British defined the nations identity of a country settled, engaged and lead by lineage of the British monarch furthering the social norm of white Australia. Shared heritage provided common ground to develop national identity and values.…
Good morning Mr. Speaker, Prime Minster Turnbull, the Honorable leader of the Opposition, Mr. Bill Shorten, Honorable Members of the House, esteemed quests, ladies and gentlemen. My name is Harrison Potter and I rise to address the house this morning to propose Zach Bryers as my candidate for the 2018 Australian of the Year Award. Zach Bryers was born in The Australian Capital Territory in 1979 and has lead the Australian effort to help guide young Australians with any troubling experiences. Zach Bryers had a harsh upbringing and was always angry at his mother because his father wasn’t there to be angry at. At fifteen years of age he left home and went to stay with his friends when he could, but often slept in the sand dunes on the beach.…
Throughout this speech, Grant uses vocal techniques to emphasis and reinforce his position on the topic and lead the audience to make discoveries about racism within Australia. His use of emphasis at the end of his speech, “Australians all, let us rejoice” presents his ideas that all Australians should be treated equal, and as it is a line repeated from early in the speech, the emphasis causes the audience to reconsider the significance of these words and question their preconceived ideas. Pauses are also used strategically throughout the speech to give the audience time to reflect on what has been said, and through this make discoveries about the content of the speech.…
On 13th Feb 2008 prime minister delivered his speech and apologized on behalf of all australians and saying that we are sorry for what we had done. This was a well known symbolic strategy that has a major impact on the Indigenous peoples. The main message of the speech was to apologize to the indigenous for all the mistreatment that they caused in the past and the effect that it had on them and their families. This was a way to try and remove barriers and build a better relationship and bring reconciliation one step closing by realising their mistakes and sincerely apologizing for all the mistreatment caused. Although the Apology itself did not refer to offering practical compensation to members of the Stolen Generations, it had a significant…

The enduring value of any speech lies in its ability to stir emotions, assure with conviction and cut to the heart of complex and controversial issues. It is the balanced sequence of structure and emotive application appropriate to its climax that directs the audience along the trajectory of ideas created by the speaker. Keating’s Redfern Speech and Anwar Sadat’s speech to the Israeli Knesset both achieve value above and beyond the time and place in which they were first delivered. The climax and textual integrity of the speech stresses the common conflict within their contexts to create a sense of urgency towards a possible future that seizes passivity and harmony. They identify the boundaries that act as the fundamental tensions to achieving…
Introduction: Australia Day (on the 26th January) is a day that a considerable amount of Indigenous Australians remembers as the 75th anniversary of the fight for Aboriginal rights and recognition in their own country, the place that they were born and raised. (2013) Consequently, in the year of 1938, the Day of Mourning protest attracted a large group of Aboriginal Australians in Sydney, marking the monumental 150 years since the Europeans settled in Australia. Furthermore, they demanded that they the same citizen rights and equality as the rest of the Australian population, the Day of Mourning protest was the birth of the well-structured Aboriginal civil rights movement.…
Australia is a country that has been described as diverse, multicultural and unique. Our geography, flora and fauna and cultural history is different from anywhere else, which has definitely captured the attention of the rest of the world. Australian society has evolved in a very short space of time from the earliest convict settlements established in the mid nineteenth century, to the cosmopolitan states that currently exist and draw immigrants from all continents across the globe. Australia’s history has reflected conflict, human rights violations and the hardship associated with establishing a refined society in a harsh and primitive landscape. Throughout the various stages of Australian history, Australians have attempted to grab onto an…
Australia Day is a national public holiday, where Aussies enjoy a day off in the sun with friends, family, fun and laughter. However, there appears to be a sparking debate on whether or not the date should be changed. Those who oppose the debate change such as Ben Roberts-Smith, author of his passionately toned opinion piece entitled ‘Our differences make Australia great, so salute our day of unity’ (published Thursday, 26th January in the Herald Sun), argue it is both a tradition and a part of our culture to honour and celebrate this national day. A proponent of this issue, Kevin V. Russell, writer of the letter to the editor ‘End Australia Day’ (published Thursday, 26th January in the Herald Sun), sarcastically argues the notion of the current…
Federation happened in 1901 when the six separate, self-governing British colonies united together to form what is now called, Australia. As a result of many great developments and events, it brought significant change. This included the Eureka Rebellion, a key event in the development of Australian democracy and identity. Another one was the Gold Rush which brought massive population growth and an increase of jobs. Wool and agricultural industries were also one of the main moments that changed Australia forever.…
How do I renew my ETA? Basically, an ETA visa allows the foreign citizen to stay in Australia for a maximum 3 months at a time, although it is valid for 12 months starting the date of issue, or until your passport’s expiry date—whichever is sooner. Having said this, the only thing you need to do is let your ETA expire and reapply for a new one in case your travel date does not correspond with the validity of your original ETA.…
I grew up in Denver, Colorado and ever since I could remember everyone around me made a big deal about Juneteenth. I never heard of Juneteenth before I moved to Colorado. In Colorado, it is so big that their is one entire week dedicated to it. It is almost considered like a holiday. Juneteenth is also known as Freedom Day.…
“When we honor our flag, we honor what we stand for as a Nation - freedom, equality, justice, and hope.” - Ronald Reagan. The American Flag is the third oldest of National Standards of the world. It’s even older than the Union Jack of Britain and the Tricolor of France. The American Flag was first sanctioned by Congress June 14,1777.…
The United States of America is a noble country home to millions of people fortunate enough to have freedom and opportunities not many countries offer. My responsibility as an American citizen includes respecting one of our greatest symbols, the American flag. The American flag, through its’ colors of red, white, and blue, symbolizes true patriotic values and standards. The color red stands for courage and honorableness of men and women who sacrificed their lives for our freedom.…
The Anzac legend was first born on the 25th of April, 1915 and since that time the legend has got greater and more and more people have gained respect for both or living and fallen soldiers. Every battle that the ANZACS thought it showed what it was like to be an Australian. These battles that we fought in like the Gallipoli campaign showed the courage and both mental and physical toughness also showing our never give up attitude. To commemorate our fallen and standing ANZAC legends we hold a day called ANZAC day. On this day we commemorate them by marching and remembering the legends of Gallipoli and other battle like the battle of Fromelles and all the men and women that fought to make this country how it is…
