a) While fighting at Gallipoli in 1915 C.E.W Bean had an idea to build a memorial to commemorate the sacrifice of the Australian people. In 1917, he obtained permission to build a nation war memorial. On ANZAC day, 1929 a stone was laid for the foundation of the Australian War Memorial. Due to the Depression and WWI, the building was delayed. The Australian War Memorial was then officially opened the 11th November 1941.

More than that it is a spirit which lives on today through a spirit of selfishness, courage, compassion and commitment. As the ANZAC legend lives on in a spirit of these values: comradeship, courage, selfishness and commitment were remember those that fought in both wars and continue to uphold this traditional values and express these in other current way of life.
The image on the right was chosen from the East Windows stained glass figures shows the ‘Spirit of the ANZAC’. This is shown through determined set face of courage, selfishness and inflicting determination. The wounded soldier has a drawn broken sword point with a blood covered tip which shows how the selfishness and commitment of the soldier to face and deal with anything that comes his way will still suffering for battle wounds. These include the pyramid like symbols above his head. This symbolises stability and physical endurance. The bare shoulders with braches, the slightly tilted hat and dark blue military pants show that even though the wounds from battle the soldier is determined and resolute to stand against adversity and endure through all battles and conflict. The image presents more in its meaning then it does in physical appearances, with the strong ANZAC spirit portrayed while the soldier is upholding the truth values of that spirt: commitment, courage, selfishness and determination
