Consolidation immediately occurred after the October Revolution with the signing of the treaty of Brest –Litovsk. This ended the war and allowed the Bolsheviks to continue governing. Small consolidations were made in the form of social reforms and the removal of rival political parties. However as discussed previously the three important factors remained important to the Bolshevik consolidation of power, the winning of the civil war predominantly Trotsky and the Red Army contributions combined with Lenin’s overall leadership along with the lifeline of the NEP. This were essentially as firstly without Lenin’s leadership the treaty of Brest –Litovsk would have not been signed thus ending Bolshevik rule. Second if the Bolsheviks had lost the civil war then the previous attempt at consolidating power would have been frivolous. Finally the civil war had taken a toll on the Russian civilisation and was close to a counter revolution if War communism was continued.
