Authors when describing their characters can either be very exaggerated with their characters or actually make them seem unstated throughout the whole story. Sometimes two stories that have similar characters express their identities in completely different ways. This happens between the short stories “What You Pawn I Will Redeem” by Sherman Alexie and “Sonny’s Blues” by James Baldwin. The protagonist Jackson squared in “What You Pawn I Will Redeem” his identity is expressed in such a manner that you feel like the author wanted to display to the readers that this guy was no good. While the author for “Sonny’s Blues” kept his protagonist simple and let the story focus on Sonny and how the brother wanted to reconnect with Sonny.…
In the excerpt from Ed Yong’s book I Contain Multitudes, he artistically argues the importance of studying microbiomes, in relation to other scientific disciplines. To craft his argument, he uses analogies to show the likeness between the Earth’s ecosystems and human internal body functions, personifies small organisms to evoke compassion from the reader, and utilizes the personal pronoun “we” to create a sense of social cohesion. The study of microbes is often neglected due to the apparent minuscule effect it has on humans, but Ed Yong persistently drew comparisons between the small microbes and the grandness of Earth’s ecosystems. He lists the various ecosystems in the world, ranging from rainforests to salt marshes, and directly after uses a parallel sentence structure to list the “ecosystems” in the human body.…
In the summary of the story, “Dicken’s: A Christmas Carol”, the main theme of the story is to have compassion and forgive people and also, giving the second chance. This is projected by making the main character a bad person then making him turn good, having everyone forgive him for the person he was and, changing himself into a positive person. In the poem, “Who is Ebenezer Scrooge?” by Simone Brooklyn, she is trying to convey the concept that we humans tend to assume what other people are like without really knowing who they really…

In the Novel Under A Cruel Star, Heda Margolius Kovaly sheds light on the repercussions of not only the German concentration camps in World War 2, but also shows how the War led to the adoption, practice, and repercussions of a hostile communist government.
