Early life: Mussorgsky was born on March 21st, 1839 (New Style), in Kareva, Russia. His father was a wealthy landowner and his mother was an exceptional piano player. His mother began teaching him to play the piano at a young age and he was playing simpler pieces by Franz Liszt by age 7. While his music education was somewhat erratic, he still held a love of music. His father enrolled him in military school as his parents plan was for him to serve in the Russian Guard which was an important role in Russian culture. After 1872 The Mighty Five began breaking apart. His health was worsening by this point the already downward spiral began to worsen for him. Along with the worsening alcholism and his epilepsy, he suffered from depression. He would never be able to make the most of his success and thereby essentially interfered with him composing. He utlimately would sink deeper and deeper into alcohol as a result to the deaths of some close friends and the dismantling of the Mighty Five. This caused him to be fired from his government job not once but twice. He would disappear for weeks at a time on dinking benges only to show up at a friends house, drunk and asking for a place to sleep, before being placed in a hospital.
