The book thief is a book about death, love and survival. There is the death of a friend, love of a parent, and survival of those who can’t take it. World War ll was a catastrophic period of time and many people didn’t have the mental strength and stability to survive it. The book thief is about Liesel Meminger a 9 year old girl who was abandoned by her mother shortly before World War II to stay with two people she doesn’t know in Molching at a foster home. The book thief takes place in another time of period, a time where words were the power. Hitler ruled with words, and this book makes you become aware of that. I was amazed by how this book makes you realize how powerful words can be, especially when people are so helpless. Hitler made a whole new nation by using his words to demand power and convince people that there should be a higher race. Words can be really powerful weapons at times. In this book, Liesel uses words to calm herself when something is wrong, to remember the past, to remember her brother and her mother. Trying to help the man who saved his life, Hans agrees to hide a Jew named

The notion of the rule-breaking is a double-edged sword, especially in a society that completely disregards the most basic code of ethics. There are essentially two categories of rules one may be faced with, those that are set by the governing power, and those that are the unspoken standards of human behavior. In the German era of Nazi reign, individuals are faced with the dilemma of either choosing to openly defy the laws of the land by supporting the Jews, receiving various degrees of punishment, or quietly succumbing to their societies inhumane ways and laws. This forced characters in The Book Thief, including Hans, Liesel, and Rudy, to re-examine their values and ultimately decide to resist these unjust laws for the sake of the Jews. Through…
