In response to a request of CBI, a Hong Kong supermarket group, for preparation of a market entry report to Vietnam, research has been made with findings applied to a number of International Market Selection Analysis Models for assessment of appropriateness of the company’s choice of market and time of entry.
Different analysis revealed that Vietnam is a suitable market for CBI’s purpose and now is the right time for market entry. Nonetheless, it also revealed that the move could be risky as CBI has no overseas experience nor any network relationship in Vietnam. A number of challenges and problems likely to be encountered by CBI were identified, and solution to them were recommended.

Chapter 3 International Market Selection Analysis Models and their Application
In this section, three “International Market Selection Analysis Models” that are considered suitable for use in CBI’s plan for entering Vietnam will (i) each be described of its functions, usage as well as (ii) critique. Also the model’s (iii) application on CBI’s case together with assessed outcome.
I Uppsala internationalization Model
Function and usage: This model explains how firms select and gradually increase their activities in foreign markets. And it distinguishes four different stages of entering an international market:
“ Stage 1: no regular export activities (sporadic export)
Stage 2: export via independent representatives (export mode)
Stage 3: establishment of a foreign sales subsidiary
Stage 4: foreign production/manufacturing units.”

And to tackle this problem, a dedicated team must first be set up in Hong Kong to work out what necessary information may be required before visiting Vietnam to gather answers as well as establishing necessary local contacts.
