In my goal to guide students through Maslow’s hierarchy to achieve self-actualization, there are many things I will implement in my classroom for the benefit of the learners. Physiological needs and safety and security needs are the first stages in Maslow’s theory, and my main goal would be to meet these needs, as students cannot move on to fulfill higher order needs if they do not have comfort and security in the environment (Levin et al., 2016). In my class I will work to create an atmosphere where students have ample space to move around, the windows are not covered, as to let in natural light, and I will be sure that it is a safe and inclusive space for all students (Levin et al., 2016). I feel that if I put these things into place that my students will be in a good position to learn and develop self-esteem. I will also implement a lot of group and interactive activities to increase the students’ sense of belonging (Levin et al., …show more content…
Students misbehave for a variety of different reasons, some of their misbehaviours can be attributed to attention seeking, to gain power and superiority, revenge, and social withdrawal (Bear, Cavalier, & Manning, 2005). Attention seeking is the most common reason for acting out because as Dreikers and Adler state when students aren’t getting the recognition they need they try to do things that will get them attention (Levin et al., 2016). Discipline problems can also be a reflection of what is going on in society (Levin et al., 2016). Society can affect students’ views on the importance of school and how they should behave. The increasing amount of violence in the media give the illusion that aggressive behaviour is okay so I feel that I need to be prepared to see an increased amount of violence in the classroom (Levin et al., 2016). Stress can be another trigger for students to have a bad day or misbehave (Levin et al., 2016). In my classroom if I am noticing a student misbehaving regularly I may want to have a meeting with them at a convenient time in the morning to debrief whatever stress they have going on either at home, or in the classroom. Another strategy I will use for students who experience stress during class is allowing them to go for a non-punitive
