In order to survive in troubled times people need to acquire the right characteristics. Theses human traits allows a person to pull through the hardest and most strenuous of times. An abundance of these qualities were displayed frequently throughout the movie “The Impossible”, directed by J.A Bayona (2012) and the book “Escape to Kalimantan” by Steve Tolbert. Some of the characteristics that have been portrayed are adaptability, resilience, hope, purpose, tenacity, love, empathy, intelligence, ingenuity and instinct. Resilience is the capability of someone who is able to recover quickly from a difficult or tough time. This characteristic assists a person to be able to hold their head high and keep ploughing forward through the challenges and obstacles that may bar their way. This quality is shown when the two characters Jack and Arnold (“Escape to Kalimantan”) will go against all the odds to try and travel to Kalimantan, this is despite Jack’s mother’s refusal and dismissal at the very thought of them going there. Their resilience to try and go to Kalimantan anyway is demonstrated when they keep pushing the boundaries to finally find a crafty way to travel there without being noticed. Without this trait Jack and his father would have never persevered and gone to Kalimantan, therefore meaning that they would have never experienced the awesome journey that awaited them there. If a person or character lacks resilience they would give up all their hopes and goals at the very second that they were rejected or defeated by an opposing obstacle. This would then accomplish nothing for a person as they would feel to defeated by what seems to be an impossible task and merely give up at the prospect.
