While Romans 5:1-11 may appear towards the end of Romans Talbert believes that the vocabulary used is closer to that of chapters 1-4. His reasoning is the usage of words such as kauchometha which means we boast. This word appears in 5:3 and 5:11 but also within chapters 2-4, however the only other usage within Romans is in chapter 15:17. This information is necessary in order to understand the splitting of Romans 5:1-11 from the rest of Romans 5. This conclusion is further reinforced by the writing style that shifts from first person in chapter 5:11 to third person in 5:12. Additionally, after breaking down the meaning of the chapters of Romans, ideas of faith and righteousness dominate chapters 1-4 as well as appear in 5:1-11. Suffering was commonplace within the Greco-Roman world and was viewed as a struggle that ultimately benefited the person going through such a “trial” because they would be strengthened by it. With this in mind, Paul was able to use suffering as an educational tool when teaching his folk. This stems from that through suffering, hope is developed as a means to look forward to when the suffering would end.
