This report focus on how Christchurch City is affected by the earthquake in 2010 and 2011. Before the earthquake in 2010 and 2011, Christchurch was a garden city whereby it was filled with tourist and people on an everyday basis. However the 2012 earthquake destroyed everything that is happening here.
I arrived in New Zealand in 2013 and I had no idea how was the city like before earthquake apart from all the existing photos. In this report, I will be writing on how Christchurch is before the earthquake and what happen after the earthquake in 2011. Also how did the government and residents of Christchurch deal with the after effects of the earthquake and the process of rebuilding the city.

It is situated on the edge of Canterbury plains and a part of the Southern Alps. Christchurch has 377,000 people which was 8.5 per cent of the New Zealand population in June 2010. Being one of the largest city in New Zealand, it serves an important economic role in the country.
Christchurch accounts for 10 per cent of the national GDP and acts as a tourism and export hub in the south island. Before the earthquake, there are more than 6,000 businesses located in the central city, 51,000 people was employed and visited by more than 1.8 million visitors annually. There are also 7,000 resident staying in the central city. (CCP, 2011, P5)
Christchurch city undergo a series of devastating earthquake starting in 2010 and the most serious one in February 2011. (CERA, 2012)
The first significant earthquake struck the central city with a magnitude on 7.1 in September 2010 causing a widespread damage to the city. The second significant earthquake struck with a magnitude of 6.3 in February 2011. The intensity and tremors were much stronger as compared to the 2010 earthquake. It resulted in 182 people being killed and many were injured. Up to 50 per cent of the building and infrastructure were destroyed and badly damaged. (CCP, 2011,
