Although the religion of Christianity originated elsewhere, it proliferated in Rome. This was especially true after Theodosius made it the official religion of the empire. Renaissance artists and historians were proud of the religion’s development that had happened in Rome, and incorporated a combination of Christian and classical Roman themes in their work. History paintings were a popular art form during the Renaissance. The Vatican, for example, contains replications of designs found on a Roman monument known as Trajan’s column. A series of famous paintings known as Triumphs of Caesar, by artist Andrea Mantegna, was inspired by ancient Roman carvings. In the 1400s, historians began to make distinctions between original works and later versions from classical Rome.
