Registered nurses are the most prevalent group of clinical healthcare professionals within the United States healthcare structure. Registered nurses are educated and practice inside a holistic context that respects and recognizes the individual, family and community as an interrelated and unified entity. Registered nurses are central to the critical changes necessary for effective healthcare delivery in today’s ever changing society.

The ADA primarily focuses on persons who are considered disabled in the workplace. However, it guarantees equal opportunity for all individuals with disabilities in regards to employment, transportation, public accommodations, State and local government amenities and services, and telecommunications (Guido, 2014). All persons with disabilities must have barrier free access to medical services and facilities. The Barrier-Free Health Care Initiative, a fragment of the ADA, consists of the provision of effective communication resources for hard of hearing and deaf individuals (e.g., TDD/telephone relay services), appropriate access to buildings, accommodations, amenities, etc. for individuals with mobility issues and physical disabilities, and equivalent access to healthcare for individuals with infectious disease or HIV/AIDS (United States Department of Justice Civil Rights Division, 2011). It is the nurses’ position to support and advocate for patients with disabilities so their rights are protected and they may receive beneficial and quality
