This is how he came up with the four stages of cognitive development: The first stage is sensorimotor development, this occurs between birth and 2 years of age, this is the earliest stage of cognitive development. Piaget believes this is the stage where children start to experience the world around them and will gain knowledge through their senses and motor movements.(About. 2015) The second stage is preoperational development, this occurs between 2 and 7 years of age, this stage children will begin to engage in symbolic play and manipulate symbols, however they still have no understanding of concrete logic. (About 2015) The third stage of cognitive development is concrete operational development. This stage occurs between the ages of 7 till around 11. This development is based on logical thinking, children will still struggle with abstract thoughts however they are more logical about concrete and specific things. (About 2015). The final stage of cognitive development is formal operational development, this stage occurs from 11 years of age and above. This final stage is marked by the emergence of abstract thought and hypothetical reasoning. (About
