Over many years, the controversy between Evolution and Creationism has taken on a whole new perspective. John Scopes, a young high school substitute teacher, was charged with illegally teaching the theory known as evolution in 1925. During this time, Creationism was mainly taught in all schools. This theory that God created the world and all life within it. At this point in time, Evolution has dominated our curriculum, it is the process by which living organisms evolve and adapt (“Introduction”).…
Imagine you are sitting in a math class and you are taking notes on logarithmic equations and every time you hear the teacher say something new a student will shout out “Will this be on the test?” Common Core Standards have been affecting students since 2001 when the No Child Left Behind Act was put in place. While some people think common core standards are a great way to keep schools on the same track, I maintain that common core standards are just a way to stress children out with over testing. Common Core Standards are a set of standards set by the National Governors Association and the Council of Chief State School Officers and Department of Education to keep schools across the country on track with other schools and to prepare students…
After looking into the Common Core Standard analyst have been able to see that they are not any better but they are not any worst. Comparing the U.S. with other countries they are not but a few years behind. Just because the standards have been changed does not mean America will see “better students.” (Gerson)This is because schools have had to work with the old standards for so long and have become accustom to them, that changing the standards means changing the technic which they have used. And because having better students does not depend on just changing standards everyone has to adjust to the new way of teaching both students and teachers…
Alison DeNisco, reporting on the standardized test scores across the nation, found that “fourth and eighth-grade students in states that spent money on more activities related to Common Core adoption outperformed their peers on the National Assessment of Educational Progress [NAEP] between 2009 and 2013” (14). Contradicting this however, DeNisco reports that “between 2013 and 2015, students in non-adoption states made larger NAEP gains than those in Common Core states” (14). This is a major cause for investigation of nationwide standards. Why does it seem the results shift so sporadically? In the state of Kentucky alone, “More than 70 percent of elementary school students scored ‘proficient’ or better in both reading and math on the state’s pre-Common Core standardized tests” (DeNisco 14).…
Mr. Toscano did a research project in New York about Common Core and how it affects American education. Students from schools were observed, since what is going on is happening and affecting them. He analyzed how the students were doing with the new system of teaching that was brought upon them. He ended up finding out that parents would complain a lot because they had a hard time helping their child with homework. Schools were pushed towards a certain way of understanding college and career readiness to suggest that the curriculum demonstrates that understanding.…
The lesson to be told from the two polls attempting to quantify the public's feelings for the Common Core State Standards is the wording in a poll can make a world of a difference, especially when pollers have strong beliefs on a topic. In a sense, the polls from PDK/Gallup and Education Next are both right. However, it’s interesting to see that the question in Education Next poll, which had more context and addressed the public's fears ended up to favor common core. It was known 80 percent of people thought they knew common core. But, as it turns out they obtain their news from bias sources such as the TV, newspapers, and radio.…
The principle behind standardized testing is to make sure a student is ready for the next grade, or to graduate high school. They also serve as a gauge of the schools ability to prepare students for that next step in their education. Standardized testing is completely undermined if students can opt out. Yet that’s what is happening with Common Core. An article by Time Magazine found that “[s]ome superintendents in New York are reporting that 60 percent or even 70 percent of their students are refusing to sit for the exams” and in 2015 1.1 million students refused to take the test (Cassidy, 2015).…
The majority of the populous speculate that Common Core was made and adopted by the states, but this is simply not true. Common core was created by two organizations, which are named, Achieve and National Governors Association. How are we supposed to believe that it is state made when the company that actually made it, is called “National Governors Association?” It is important to know that the government created and implemented Common Core, because it is very possible that this goes against the tenth amendment. Despite what people think of Common Core, it is definitely not what it seems and can not be…
But there is a problem also if students want to keep it up with this standard than students needs the teachers to be more helpful. Also, the students are more focused and into this standard because it is challenging and everyone wants to pass the class. As researching, it is believable and true; Common Core would be universal. Another benefit is the Common Core provides higher standards and expectations for students. It has great resources that are really helpful.…
Fallacies of the Common Core Draft People in society are expected to learn the same material in school as everyone else in society. Although teachers and administrators try to teach the most basic information and facts, they also try to let kids advance in the field they are most strong. Many people and children have strengths in certain subjects and weaknesses in other subjects. In most states, there are a set of rules called Common Core State Standards that are being implemented in public schools. These standards are meant to be a guide for teachers to allow students to gain knowledge to continue their education past high school and become a member of the working society.…
Common Core Common Core is a new step process in creating a high quality education. It will help children to succeed in the state standards proficiency goals and help schools succeed also. These state standards will show what each child should be learning at their grade level; it will allow teachers to better prepare students and help them learn. The Common Core State Standards will start at an early age and focus on understanding the basic core concepts. This will give both the teacher and student the time needed to teach and learn so they can understand the concept.…
Although states continue have differences in their education quality, they all (all who adopt Common Core) have the same educational goals they must reach which encourages them to improve their schools’ education quality. This is also extremely advantageous to students who move frequently because they will be on the same level as their grade level no matter what state they move to. Even though opponents argue that this lowers the standards of many schools, that argument is flawed because there was an “explicit agreement that no state would lower its standards” and “the standards were informed by the best in the country” (Myths vs. Facts).…
On January 8, 2002, The No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) was signed into law by President George W. Bush. The No Child Left Behind Act is a federal law which gives money for educational assistance to improve students which have not reached expected academic level. Even though, The No Child Left Behind was signed into law it’s main attempt was to illuminate the National Standards. The National Standards are tools that provide teachers with accurate utensils to understand the estimated expected levels of achievement for a specific age group, environment curriculum, gender and grade. How can the National Standard benefit each student's by improving academically ?…
Common Core standards are set in place in the education system to prepare children for college. Giving students knowledge and thinking skills from kindergarten through twelve grade. The Common Core has caused debate from teachers, parents, and politics whether it should be in place or not. Some feel positive the Common Core, should be in place due to, the work it prepares students for and others feel, as if it is a burned on teachers creativity skills. Also, each state would be fair and have the same standards in the Education System.…
Teaching controversial issues in the classroom through discussion is the most beneficial method for students to learn about these matters because it teaches them how to be open-minded, think critically about their own beliefs, and forces them to master their public speaking and interpersonal skills. The benefits of using discussions in classrooms to teach contentious topics are endless but the three previously mentioned have proven to be the most valuable by students, teachers, and parents everywhere. Class discussions force students to listen, embrace, and be respectful of opinions and beliefs that are divergent to their own. As mentioned by David Bridges (1979), an author who has formerly analyzed the notion of discussion, the sharing of…
