In other words, the officers are tasked with the duty to monitor the offenders’ daily activities, to ensure that the individual is not violating the orders of their probation. As by violation of probation, the offender would be arrested and placed back in a correctional institution, either jail or prison, which is determined by a judge. Furthermore, the officers administer drug and alcohol tests to determine if the offender has violated one of the conditions of their probation. As previously mentioned, the juvenile and adult justice systems have distinct variations in the manner in which they operate. However, both systems do express similarities in the divisions of juvenile and adult probation, allowing for the officers to develop similar roles and responsibilities.
In other words, probation officers who work with adults and juveniles are required to receive at minimum a bachelor’s degree. Furthermore, these officers are viewed as individuals who share special skills and characteristics as probation officers. In particular, the officers are expected to be familiar with resources throughout the community to help the offender, have strong communication skills and knowledge of the criminal laws.
